  • Optoelectronics & information industry was founded quite early in Wuhan. The industry has delivered strong, effective, and sustained growth in recent years. Especially in East Lake Developing Zone, a number of universities and institutes, which are engaged in teaching or researching optoelectronics & information subjects, are coupled with many renowned optoelectronics & information companies, both home and abroad. Cooperating together, they enjoy recognizable advantages of high technology, qualified personnel, and firm industry foundation.

Wuhan is the cradleland for optoelectronics & telecommunications industry in China. It is Wuhan Institute of Posts & Telecommunications (WIP) that first open an optical line (8mb/s) for telecommunication.

Early in 1994, Wuhan was approved to establish a national research center of the optical telecommunications engineering. In 1999, a national optoelectronic technology center was founded in Wuhan, which now becomes the national technology hub in producing optical fiber &cable, optoelectronic units, opical transmission equipment, and optical instrument. Recently, two standards, namely X.85 and Y.1321 issued by WIP were approved by International Telecommunications Association, which symbolized that WIP has come to be one member among the world advanced in this field.

From 1971, HuaZhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) began to do research in gas laser, solid laser, and their respective applications. In 1980s', the first national key laser technology lab was established at HUST. In early 1990s', the State Planning Committee approved HUST to establish the first national laser processing engineering research center. More than 10 years have passed. It has been responsible for 21 National Tackling-key-problem Science and Technology Projects, and another 10 "State 863 Project ". At present, HUSTstill maintains its leadership in laser technology and laser application in China. Moreover, HUST is also recognizable for its optoelectronics, physical electronics, optical telecommunication, information processing, digital control technology and so on.
Besides, Wuhan University, HUST, and Wuhan Mapping Science University are facilitated with a national software engineering key lab, a Plastic Forming Simulation key lab, a National telemetric mapping key lab, a national multimedia software engineering research center, a national CAD software engineering center and a GPS engineering research center respectively.
China Geology University, Wuhan Industry University, 709 Institute, 105 Institute, Wuhan physics Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Earthquake Research Institute, and Hubei Chemical Research Institute all established their developing centers for optics, telemetric, optical material, and applied software engineering.

As for its qualified personnel, the East Lake Developing Zone enjoys wide choices from 100,000 highly educated experts and technicians of 23 universities and 56 research institutes. One third of those people are engaging themselves in research and industrialization of optoelectronics & information technology. Among them, 10 academicians granted by Chinese Academy of Sciences (from altogether 42 in Wuhan) are doing great contribution to the field of optoelectronics & information technology.

Till 1999,143 companies in the East Lake developing Zone were involved in developing and manufacturing optoelectronics & information products. Among them, 59 companies dealt with Information optoelectronics technology, 12 with power optoelectronics technology, and the other 72 with software engineering. Last year it reached a revenue total of 6,030,000,000 RMB (information optoelectronics market 5,000,000,000 RMB, energy optoelectronics 210,000,000 RMB, and software industry 820,000,000 billion RMB).
In information optoelectronics industry, East Lake Developing Zone took its leadership in China. It can produce 2,500,000km optical fiber per year, and 60,000km optical cable per year, and it is now the largest manufacturer for optical fiber &cable in China. It is also capable of large-scale production for optoelectronic devices, optical fiber terminal, and optical telecommunication equipment. In energy optoelectronics industry, East Lake Developing Zone is one of the three biggest industry bases in China. Products, such as high-power laser, laser processing equipment, laser welding equipment, laser medical equipment, and etc, reaches quite high level in technology, and enjoys considerable popularity in the market. In software developing industry, many excellent software products and property right achievements have won national Science Progress Prices. Its multimedia education software, CAD/CAM software, GPS software and Simulation Software also gain national reputation.

In East Lake Developing Zone, many enterprises are involved in developing and manufacturing optoelectronics & information products. They are: Yangtze Optical Fiber, WIP (including Optical Communication), Changjiang Ericcsson Co. Ltd., Wuhan Telecommunications Device Company, Wuhan NEC Optical Fiber Comunications Industry Co. Ltd,

Wuhan Changjiang Telecommunications Company, the Optical Cable Transducer Center of Wuhan Industry University, the Semiconductor Factory of Wuhan University, Huagong Laser Engineering Company, Chutian Laser Group Co. Ltd, Tuanjie Laser Equipment Co. Ltd., Wuhua Zhonggong Laser Engineering Co. Ltd., Maichi, Science & Technology Co. Ltd., East Lake Memory Co. Ltd., East Lake Optic Disk Co. Ltd, 709 Institute, Tianyu Information Company, and etc.. These enterprises are either top or competitive enterprises in their own trade in China. Most of them are located within 4km2 range to the East Lake Hi-tech Science Industry Park. That is to say, the Optoelectronics & Information Base of East Lake Developing Zone preliminarily comes into being.
