Wuhan, the capital of Hubei
Province, is the largest city in Central China.The
Changjing, the third largest river in the world,
intersects the Hanshui River, the largest branch of the
former at the city proper, and divides Wuhan into three
towns, namely Hankou, Hanyang, and Wuchang. Thus, the
city has always been called "the city on rivers". The
city government administers at present 9 urban districts
and two counties, altogether 8467 km2 with a pop-ulation
of 7,230,000 residents, including over 4,000,000 urban
dwellers. The geographical position of Wuhan is 30'-33'N
and 114'-19'E. Its climate is subtropic, characterized
with humid monsoon. |

The four seasons in Wuhan is
distinctive and her annual frog-free period is about 240
days. Wuhan is located at the junction of the
Beijing-Guanzhou railway and the Changjiang River
waterway, and is always referred to as "the Thoroughfare
of nine provinces". It is directly linked up to Shanghai
in the east, Changing in the west, Guangzhou in the
south, and Beijing in the north. Since Wuhan is about
1000 Kilometers away from each of the four major cities
of China, the megalopolis can been seen to be located at
the center of China's economic geographic

Wuhan is a famous city of
China rich in history and culture. According to
the archeological research , the Panlong city,
north of Wuhan, is the ruins in the Shang Dynasty
dating back to over 3500 years ago. Wuhan is also
the cradleland of Chu culture dating back to over
2500 years ago. In the Three- kingdom period, over
1700 years ago, Wuhan was a famous battlefield.
Over 80 years ago, Wuchang experienced the first
uprising of the 1911 Revolution led by sun
Yat-sen. |
The Yellow Crane Tower has
the reputation for the first of the three major
renown towers in Jingnan (the south region of the
Changjiang River). The East lake, enjoys its
privilege as a state-level scenic spot for its
natural beauty. The Guiyuan Buddhist Temple is
known as the "ancient temple in the Buddhist
center". Places of interests, like the Ancient
Lute Terrace (Guqintai), Qinchuan Pavilion, and
Chutian Fort have attracted millions of tourists.
Most important above all, Wuhan is the only way to
the Three Gorges and other famous scenic spots in
Central

Wuhan, is one of the six centric
cities. In 1992, it was granted to be the 6th of the 50
competitive cities of China, in terms of its
comprehensive economic strength. In 1997, the domestic
national productivity in Wuhan was valued at 91.5
billion RMB, an increase of 13% over 1996, in which the
primary industry grew by 8.3%, the secondary industry by
15.2%, and the tertiary industry by 16.2%. In 1997, the
municipal total industrial production value was 1175
billion RMB, 12% increase over 1996. The total
agricultural production value was 12.46 billion RMB,
increasing 8.5% more than that of 1996.

The social fixed-assets investment
totaled 42.8 billion RMB, a 2.9% increase of 1996. The
retailed revenue of social consumption goods was 5.27
billion RMB, increasing 15.5 than that of 1996. The
financial revenue was 10.606billion RMB, increasing
17.1% than that of last year. The balance of varieties
of the banks' deposits at the end of 1997 was 102.72
billion RMB, a 17..6% increase of last year. The balance
of the residents' saving deposits is 94.1 billion RMB, a
16.7% increase0f last year. The average annual wage of
an urban employee is 5912RMB, and the income per capita
of the farmers is 2730
